The Fall of Afghanistan Brings Back Memories of Vietnam<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Afghanistan fell into the hands of the Taliban! My heart sank at the news. Painful memories flashed back. I know what it means and how it hurts. I lived through the turmoil and the turbulence forty-six years ago. And I am still trying to recover!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the morning of April 30, 1975, I cried my heart out in my home while the neighbors made sure they were seen excitedly calling out to each other to come out to the streets to greet \u201cthe Revolutionary Army\u201d! Inside our home, my parents and brother just let me pour out my nonstop sobs. They did not try to calm me down. All was lost now! That fateful morning marked the end of the Republic of Vietnam, commonly known as South Vietnam, that I had known my whole life until then. That was the regime I was born in, grew up in and went to school and planned my future in. I respected its flag, enjoyed the education it provided, and took the freedom if offered for granted. All of a sudden everything was yanked out from under me. The fall of South Vietnam happened all of a sudden to me, even though the overture was played out for weeks with the fall of Ban M\u00ea Thu\u1ed9t, \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng, Nha Trang, etc. I refused to believe my Vietnam, the South, was coming to its end. We were near defeat by a hairline in 1968 with the VietCong taking over Hu\u1ebf, with the Citadel of Qu\u1ea3ng Tr\u1ecb besieged for months in 1972, and the 98-day long resistance at An L\u1ed9c. But we always reversed the situation and regained the territory that was ours. On April 30, 1975, however, the defeat was final. But we were unable to accept it. It was true there was no bloodbath, no tribunal sentencing \u201cpublic enemies\u201d immediately after Saigon fell. But what unfolded in the succeeding months and years left unhealable wounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vietnam War was not simply an internal conflict between the North and the South of Vietnam. Nor was it just a competition between two political forces. I did not see it then, but I see it clearly now. There was behind-the-scene involvement by world powers, who, by their financial means and their deft diplomatic maneuvers, got what they thought was their fair share and decided to end the game. But the South Vietnamese did not see that. They did not play games. They fought with real determination, shed their own blood, left their own arms or legs at the battlefield, even their own bodies in the jungle or in military cemeteries. They saw the war as their war, and they pledged their blood and soul to fight it. They fought for their home villages, for their parents who had left everything in the North to run away from the Communist, for their brother soldiers who shared a drink amid loud laughter the night before and were helicoptered back to the base in coffins draped with the national flag the next morning.  The ARVN soldiers were fighting still in March and they were fighting still in April 1975 with as much fervor and valor as they had always been fighting. Then all of a sudden there was dead silence. The order was given out to retreat. The American allies were gone. The planes did not have enough fuel to make it over to the battlefields. The guns did not have enough ammunitions to hurl fires at the enemy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a few days, the following took place at the Presidential Palace in Saigon: the then current president of the country relinquished his title and boarded a plane. The next president shortly walked off the job, then the third (and the last one of the South Vietnam regime) declared unconditional surrender and ordered all armed forces to drop weapons. So the fighters had to strip themselves off their uniforms and combat boots and walked bare chested and barefooted home. Later they were forced into \u201creeducation camps\u201d, taught to write their own confessions reciting their \u201ccrimes to the people\u201d, forced into hard labor and starvation for years. Many of them never returned. Those who did were emaciated, their souls broken permanently.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A war is fought on different levels and from different points of view. At the US level, the Americans believed they had paid their fair share too. Fifty-eight thousand soldiers who did not return to their loved ones were memorialized in black marble in Washington D.C. Billions of dollars was spent on South Vietnam until the deficit could no longer be sustained. And through diplomacy Nixon had shaken hands with Mao Zedong in Beijing in 1972. Vietnam was no longer a frontier to guard off the Chinese and the communist world. It\u2019s time to call it quit in Vietnam. Simple math and easy decision!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A South Vietnamese soldier who fought in the war, however, did not think much about events that happened thousands of miles away. He just knew that he could not allow his post to fall into enemy hands, let his fellow soldiers be killed by the enemy, the villagers\u2019 harvests be confiscated, houses be destroyed if he retreated. He naively believed that he might die one day, but his fellow compatriots would continue the sacred cause and keep South Vietnam safe from the enemy. Defeat or surrender were never in the plan. Then they became a reality in April 1975.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After twenty years and billions of dollars sunk into Afghanistan, it is now a simple math and an obvious choice for the Americans to call it quit too. I understand. I don\u2019t blame anyone. A war might be a geopolitical game to world powers, a give-and-take maneuver on the global chessboard, but it is something very personal to the soldier who fights it and to the people who live it. Its ending brings personal losses, shatters dreams, extinguishes hopes, ruins life\u2019s meaning. Its effects are felt day and night, year in year out, unrelenting, never receding. Both the victor and the defeated will live with invisible wounds for the rest of their lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am now living in the U.S, following the news in Afghanistan with fresh pains. It\u2019s just too close to home. I saw my people among the throng running along the US plane in Hamid Karzai Airport and falling to the ground. My people did the same in 1975. I read in the news that Afghan women were trying to buy burqas to cover themselves from head to toe and hide away western clothes and makeup. We did something similar. A month or two after April 1975, I was in shock to see my college friends sporting black silk pants and white \u00e1o b\u00e0 ba at school instead of their signature blue jeans or miniskirts. And from what we went through months later and years later, I know this is just the beginning for the Afghan people. Things will unfold beyond their control. The Afghans who had worked for years along the Americans just because they believed in democracy for the country, education for girls and opportunities for women, institutionalized government for the people\u2026 and who are now left behind, are just starting their long journey today. As I heard on the radio the other day, \u201cthey should not worry about losing their lives, but they should worry about losing their livelihood and their way of life.\u201d And that will be a great loss, sometimes greater than losing one\u2019s own life. They will find out what they need to endure, and whether they have the strength to endure. They have no choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wish them luck and I pray for them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
