I will pull this trigger rather than let the communists take us away\u2024&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">His youngest daughter at that time was 11-year-old Jean\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fortunately, he didn&#8217;t pull the trigger.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They eventually fled by helicopter to an island off the coast. Then to the Philippines, then it was on to Guam\u201a where they spent the next three months living in a refugee camp before being sent to Fort Chaffee in Arkansas\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Lutheran church in a small town called Milton\u201a Pennsylvania\u201a agreed to sponsor them\u2024. The family of eight arrived shortly afterwards with no possessions\u201a no savings\u201a and not a lick of English between them\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened next is the kind of American tale that sounds too good to be true\u2026 except every word of it is\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jean would go to learn English, study hard, and by high school, she was at the top of her class.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">She would eventually receive an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">West Point was difficult. It didn&#8217;t break her, but it tested everything she had\u2024. Jean recalled that &#8220;everything was difficult for me, but It taught me not to give up easily\u2024&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fast forward to her Firstie year, on the evening of February 6\u201a 1985\u201a Jean was invited to attend the State of the Union. She was in the gallery of the U\u2024S\u2024 House of Representatives\u201a along with First Lady Nancy Reagan\u201a as President Ronald Reagan addressed the nation\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">President Reagan took time from the business of government to tell Jean&#8217;s story. The refugee girl\u201a the Lutheran church\u201a the small Pennsylvania town\u201a West Point, and then he said: &#8220;I thought you might like to meet an American hero named Jean Nguyen\u2024&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The chamber rose in a standing ovation\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four months later\u201a on May 22\u201a 1985\u201a 10 years to the day her family fled the falling country with nothing\u201a Jean graduated as the first Vietnamese-American woman to graduate from the U\u2024S\u2024 Military Academy at West Point\u2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reporters circled her\u201a declaring her a first\u2024. She responded\u201a &#8220;I don&#8217;t consider myself the first this or that\u2024.
